The Met Gala is held every May in New York to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest exhibition, with guests asked to dress to match the theme.
This year’s exhibition is Camp: Notes on Fashion,Ā inspired by US writer and political activist Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on Camp.
The outfits this year were therefore, like the exhibition, based on “irony, humour, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration”.
And showing everyone how it was done at the very start of the night was singer Lady Gaga, who arrived in a billowing pink outfit which was not quite what it seemed at first glance.
FOUR OUTFIT CHANGES!
Bringing a shimmering slice of āOld Testament Realnessā to the Met, Pose star Billy Porter out-walked everyone else without even touching the floor. Carried into the venue by a troupe of muscular men, lounging about in a golden winged ensemble inspired by Elizabeth Taylor playing Cleopatra, Cherās costumes, Diana Ross, and the late ballroom queen Pepper LaBeija, who appears in the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, it was the best entrance of the entire night.
Lizzo essentially used the event as an opportunity to take selfies with absolutely everyone. Her Instagram story this morning features grinning snaps with celebs including: Tracee Ellis Ross, Idris Elba, Ashley Graham, Dua Lipa, Naomi Campbell, Marc Jacobs, Shawn Mendes, Yara Shahidi, Sarah Paulson, Billy Porter, Frank Ocean, Anderson .Paak, Solange, J-Lo, Rita Ora, and Kate Moss…phew! And as an extra bonus, Lizzo also filmed her real-time reaction to Cherās live performance!
